Design system health check: can your AI agents read it?

Eleven questions, three minutes. You’ll get a scored report on two things: how healthy your design system is for your team, and how well AI agents can read it.

Built on what we’ve learned running design system assessments for B2B SaaS teams.

A developer on your team needs to build a new screen tomorrow. What actually happens?

Which best describes your role?

Which best describes your product organization?

Which of these exist at your company today?

Select all that apply.

How often is this true at your company?

Rate each statement.

The same UI element exists in multiple versions across product modules.

Designers and developers debate which component is the ‘correct’ one.

What ships doesn’t match what was designed, and rework follows.

Accessibility issues surface late in QA — or after release.

Releases slow down because UI inconsistencies keep getting caught.

Nobody can clearly say who owns the design system.

And how often is this true of your AI tools?

AI coding tools generate UI that ignores our components and tokens.

Where should we send your report?

You’ll get your tier, what’s driving it and the first three moves we’d make in your position. No forced sales call. Whether we ever talk is up to you.

Your tier

Where your system sits on health and machine-readability, and what’s driving that placement.

What the health check looks at

Foundations

Whether tokens live in code, developers use a coded component library, and Figma matches code.

Governance

Whether the system has a named owner and a contribution process.

Daily friction

Duplicate UI, debates over the right component, late accessibility issues and releases slowed by inconsistency.

Machine-readability

Whether specs and docs are machine-readable, your AI tools are configured with your system, and what they generate stays on-system.

Why machine-readability is now part of design system health

Your team probably ships some UI through AI agents already. They can only use what they can read.

Documentation written for people tells an agent very little. It needs tokens in code, specs in a structured format and rules it can load as context.

Without those, it improvises. Every off-system screen is new debt, created at machine speed.

That’s what we mean by agentic-first: a design system built to be read by machines as well as people.

Frequently asked questions

What is a design system health check?

A short self-assessment that scores your design system on how well it works for your team and how well AI agents can read it. You get your tier, your two biggest leaks and your first three moves by email.

What is an agentic-first design system?

One built to be read by AI agents as well as people. Tokens live in code, specs and docs are machine-readable, and AI tools are configured with the system, so generated code lands on-system by default.

How is the tier decided?

Health comes first. A system that’s weak for people lands in tier 1 or 2, whatever its AI setup. Machine-readability then separates tier 3 from tier 4.

What if we don’t use AI coding tools?

There’s an answer for that, and you still get the full report.

How accurate is it?

It’s self-reported, so it’s as accurate as your answers. The Design System Assessment is three days of us checking it properly.
