Redesigning AXON’s mobile app into a scalable, white-labelled experience

AXON needed to rebuild their mobile product after an acquisition, align it with their web platform, and ship it fast. We redesigned the app from the ground up, integrating strategy, design system work, and native-first product design into a single workflow.

The new AXON mobile experience designed for white-label scale and developer velocity.

Making technical moments feel human

Telecom apps often feel cold and transactional. We wanted AXON to stand apart. We opted for subtle illustrations for onboarding, empty states, and diagnostic flows to soften the experience and guide users through frustrating situations like WiFi drops or slow speeds.

“The visuals and the execution gave us a mobile experience that outperforms anything in our competitive space.”

Native-first design to speed up iOS and Android development

AXON’s engineers needed clarity, structure, and faster delivery. We leaned into native conventions from day one, using platform-specific navigation, component props, and interaction mechanics.

Hand-off files were precise and developer-ready: documented props, token mappings, edge cases, and behavioural notes. The impact was immediate. A dramatically faster iOS and Android implementation cycles.

“EDL made it feel like design was engineering. The handoff quality saved our team weeks of work.”

Motion used to explain, not decorate

Animations were designed as functional cues. The network barometer animates to communicate speed and load. Device nodes move to show their relationship in the topology. Diagnostic states shift with purposeful transitions to help users understand what is happening and why.

Motion became a core part of the mental model.

Motion used strategically to reveal logic and drive user understanding.

Extending the AXON design system from web to mobile

The mobile app became the second major surface built on AXON’s design system. Tokens, components, interaction patterns, and accessibility rules were shared across both products, allowing brand-level consistency and faster iteration.

White-labelling added complexity, so every component was designed with flexible logic, variant handling, and strict governance.

Shared design system tokens powering both the mobile and web applications.

Balancing simplicity for everyday users and power for network pros

AXON’s audience ranges widely. Someone in rural Kansas trying to fix the WiFi so their kids can do homework. Someone in a fully wired, 300-square-foot smart home managing VLANs, mesh points, and device load.

Designing for both without drowning users in complexity became the core UX problem.

We created a multi-layered experience: ultra-clear for casual users, with advanced panels, device-level insights, and topology views available when needed. Every interaction was driven by clarity and context.

A dual-layered UX balancing simplicity and advanced controls.

Part of a broader transformation inside AXON Networks

Our work on the mobile app and web platform contributed to AXON’s wider product modernisation. The redesign effort supported AXON in winning the industry award for “Most Innovative Cloud Product or Solution”.

The mobile app wasn’t the sole contributor, but it played its part in reshaping how AXON delivers digital experiences.
